Dinner New Year’s Eve in Cuba, may be the most important family gathering after birthdays. It is a time to reunite all the people you care, family or friends, and wait for another year to fulfill dreams and bushes. To be Invited to join this dinner in Cuba, is a compliment and a sign of respect and affection for the guest.

My family gets together every December 31 in a simple ceremony, a small dinner, nothing glamorous but well prepared by Frida, my girlfriend, and my mother. The process of preparing food is the right moment to share a drink, a beer, talk about our future plans and watch some TV shows.
Other Cuban families make their dinners momentous. Extended families usually roast a pig and sometimes even two. Also some families for dinner cooked chicken or a fish, but the Cuban tradition is the pig. Beer, rum, music, much and much noise and at midnight the traditional launch of a bucket to water at the street to take away the year’s ending the bad stuffs.
I want to share with you the highlights of our simple family dinner and the dishes we brought to the table.

La Cena de Fin de Año, en Cuba, puede que sea la más importante reunión familiar después de los cumpleaños. Es un momento para reunir a los que más quieres, familiares o amigos, y esperar la llegada de otro año de sueños y matas por cumplir. Invitar a esperar el Año Nuevo, en Cuba, es un halago y una muestra de respeto y cariño para el invitado.

Mi familia se reúne cada 31 de diciembre en una ceremonia sencilla, una pequeña cena, nada glamorosa pero bien preparada por Frida y por mi madre. El proceso de preparación de los alimentos es el momento adecuado para compartir un trago, una cerveza, conversar de nuestros planes futuros y ver algún programa de televisión.

Otras familias cubanas hacen de sus cenas todo un momento trascendental. Las familias extensas habitualmente asan un cerdo y a veces hasta dos. También algunas familias para la cena cocinan pollo o algún pescado, pero la tradición cubana es el cerdo. Cervezas, ron, música, mucho, mucho ruido y a la medianoche lanzar voladores o el tradicional lanzamiento de un balde a agua a la calle para que se lleve lo malo del año que termina.
